Located in a mysterious region, Malawi has long been an enigma to herpetologists. Neither southern nor eastern Africa, this country remained unexplored, until the recent publication of a groundbreaking field guide on Snakes and other Reptiles of Zambia and Malawi.

The world is teeming with reptiles and amphibians, yet some regions remain uncharted. Embark on an adventure of discovery, the first of its kind in Malawi. With a wealth of rarely-seen species awaiting, it’s sure to be an unforgettable journey of epic proportions.

Lake Malawi, one of the most stunning in Africa, boasts an incredible diversity of fish species. In addition to diving, this expedition will take you through the forests of both the north and south regions in search of elusive chameleons, snakes, and amphibians. Expedition Itinerary

Day 1 - 3

Blantyre - Mulanje

Embark on a journey to Malawi's tallest mountain, Mount Mulanje, rising sharply from the Phalombe plains. This impressive Inselberg is home to a plethora of rare and endemic species, including the elusive Mulanje Pigmy Chameleon, Mitchell's Flat Lizard, and possibly an undescribed species of Bush Viper. As we explore the sprawling grass plains, gorges, and dense gallery forests, we'll have the chance to encounter some of Malawi's unique bird species and reptiles, such as the stunning Mulanje Chameleon.

Day 3 - 4

Mulanje - Chipoka

Our journey takes us to the small lakeside town of Chipoka, where we'll have the opportunity to encounter one of the rarest species of snake in Southern Africa, the wild Swamp Viper. In addition to these elusive creatures, we may also come across other unique species, such as the Banded Rubber Frog and Eastern Tiger Snake. Be sure to keep an eye out for the beautiful Killifish as we explore the flood plains.

Day 4 - 5

Chipoka - Luwawa

Our next stop is Luwawa Forest Reserve, situated on the Southern Vipyia plateau. This area is home to a wide variety of fascinating species, from colorful Reed Frogs to Green Snakes and Night Adders. As we explore this beautiful region, we'll also have the opportunity to observe some of Malawi's unique bird species, making for a truly unforgettable experience.

Day 5 - 9

Luwawa - Nyika

Prepare to be enchanted by the stunning Nyika National Park, nestled atop the Nyika Plateau. The scenic drive through old growth Miombo forest takes us to rolling grass hills as far as the eye can see, home to grazing Roan Antelopes, Zebra, and Reedbuck. We'll have the chance to encounter Malawi's endemic Nyika Girdled Lizard and Nyika Whistling Chameleon, as well as rare snake species like Tornier's Cat Snake and the Rungwe Bush Viper. This vast park offers a lifetime of exploration and wonder.

Day 9 - 13

Nyika - Misuku

Our next destination is the small town of Misuku, nestled in the hills of northern Malawi. Towering above the town are three hills covered in dense gallery forest, home to some of Malawi's most incredible species. The Gaboon Adder and Rungwe Bush Viper have established populations here, and we'll have the chance to observe fascinating chameleon species, such as the Ntchisi Pigmy Chameleon and the Ukinga Hornless Chameleon. The people of Misuku are just as incredible, with their welcoming and respectful nature.

Day 13 - 15

Misuku - Chinteche

Cool off with a dip in the crystal-clear waters of Lake Malawi after a successful herping trip. Makuzi Beach Lodge, located in a private cove, offers unparalleled serenity and breathtaking snorkeling opportunities. For those still keen on herping, we may come across species like the Boomslang, Green Mamba, and Black Necked Spitting Cobra.
